Meet Squadron Leader Deepak Kumar: The Sky Warrior Who Saved Lives and a National Asset

In the realm of military aviation, few stories shine as brightly as that of Squadron Leader Deepak Kumar, a Flying Pilot with the Indian Air Force, who exemplified extraordinary courage and presence of mind in a life-threatening mid-air emergency. For his heroic actions, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra by the President of India on August 14, 2024.
On the fateful night of 25 August 2023, Squadron Leader Deepak Kumar was on an instructional mission at Air Force Station Hakimpet. He was flying a Kiran aircraft alongside a trainee pilot during a night sortie under pitch-dark conditions—a scenario that offers little visual reference, even for seasoned flyers.

As the aircraft went around after a low overshoot, disaster struck. A bird hit led to a catastrophic engine flameout, rendering the aircraft powerless. The undercarriage was in transition—partially retracted—leaving little time and almost no margin for error. In that split second, where panic could be fatal, Deepak Kumar displayed nerves of steel.
Without hesitation, Squadron Leader Kumar made the bold decision to force-land the powerless jet straight ahead, rather than attempt a risky turn-back. He swiftly instructed the trainee pilot to lower the undercarriage, all while gauging the minimal cues available in the dark night sky.

Landing an aircraft without engine power is among the most challenging feats in aviation—doing it in the dark on a shortened runway is even more perilous. Despite having only 1,000 feet of runway left, his superlative flying skills, prompt shutdown of systems, skillful braking, and successful engagement of the arrester barrier ensured the aircraft came to a halt safely, avoiding a catastrophic crash.

In this grave situation, Squadron Leader Deepak Kumar not only saved the life of the young trainee pilot but also preserved a valuable national asset, the aircraft itself. His actions were not only technically brilliant but also profoundly selfless. His ability to stay calm, take control, and execute a flawless forced landing under such extreme pressure reflects the highest traditions of the Indian Air Force.
