“My parents have always inspired me. Serving in the Armed Forces Medical Services was my childhood dream, and I'm honoured to uphold our family's legacy,” said Poyla, who also served as College Cadet Captain.
When Poyla entered AFMC in 2020, her mother was heading the biochemistry department. Reflecting on her daughter's achievement, Col Misra remarked, "On campus, she was just another medical cadet to me. Today, she has made us incredibly proud."
Initially inclined towards joining the Indian Army, Poyla eventually opted for the Indian Air Force to explore a unique path. “Having witnessed my parents' experiences in the Army, I decided to pursue something slightly different,” she explained.
An exceptional student throughout her academic journey, Poyla topped Standard X at Bishop’s School, Undri, and Standard XII at Army Public School, Southern Command. Additionally, she secured the second rank in the AFMC entrance examination. Although opportunities in prestigious civilian medical colleges were available, her strong commitment to the military tradition motivated her decision to join AFMC. She will soon commence a one-year internship at the Command Hospital, Indian Air Force, Bengaluru.
The ceremony was notably emotional for Lieutenant Nisha Bharti, who lost her father, Subedar Vinod Kumar, two years prior. "My father dreamed of seeing me graduate from AFMC. His absence is deeply felt today," said Nisha, whose family attended the ceremony carrying her father's photograph.
Vice Admiral Arti Sarin addressed the graduating cadets, highlighting integrity, honour, and selfless service. "You are now custodians of a proud legacy. Always serve with dedication, integrity, and humility, and let these values guide your professional journey," she advised.
At the graduation parade held at Capt Devashish Sharma, Kirti Chakra parade ground, 121 medical graduates of the 59th batch were commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services—95 joined the Army, 11 the Navy, and 15 the Air Force.
