His journey reflects the ethos of dedicated service that defines the Indian Army’s officer cadre.
Context of Operation Sindoor
Operation Sindoor was India’s measured and precise military response to the 22 April 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, primarily Hindu tourists. The assault, claimed by a faction linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, prompted a swift retaliatory operation targeting terrorist infrastructure associated with groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Conducted on 7 May 2025, the operation employed a combination of stand-off weapons, including artillery and missile systems, to strike nine designated terror sites while minimising collateral damage and avoiding Pakistani military installations.
Colonel Lamba’s regiment played a central role in the ground-based artillery component of the operation, demonstrating the Indian Army’s ability to achieve rapid deployment and coordinated precision engagement under demanding conditions.
Gallant Actions and Leadership Under Fire
The official citation for the Vir Chakra, notified by the President of India and published in the Gazette of India, provides a detailed account of Colonel Lamba’s contributions:
“Colonel Koshank Lamba displayed flawless leadership and at a short notice executed first ever air mobilization of a specialised equipment battery, thereby ensuring timely inter command induction for ‘Operation’ with utter secrecy. The officer because of his vast experience was moved at a short notice and was instrumental in carrying out acquisition and analysis of one of the most difficult target. His technical prowess on equipment, tactical knowledge and time bound relentless mission oriented training transformed his subunit to mission capable within five days. Once the unit was tasked to orchestrate coordinated precision engagement of most vital terrorist infrastructure in Northern Command, the officer demonstrated extreme courage and directed synchronized fire mission with absolute surprise despite under enemy observation and fire. Once the enemy retaliated with heavy bombardment, with utter disregard to personal safety, the commanding officer kept moving from gun to gun thereby motivating his troops ensuring mission accomplishment. His resolute leadership and bravery in the face of enemy fire resulted in destruction of multiple terrorist Camps and neutralization of a large number of terrorists. For displaying exceptional bravery, valour and courage under fire reflecting the traditional martial ethos of Indian Army, Colonel Koshank Lamba is awarded ‘VIR CHAKRA’.”
In subsequent interviews, Colonel Lamba elaborated on the operational challenges and ethical considerations. He confirmed that intelligence indicated terrorists had positioned camps near civilian areas in an attempt to use human shields. Despite this, his unit executed strikes with absolute precision, ensuring complete destruction of terrorist infrastructure while inflicting no harm on the civilian population. “No orders were needed. It’s part of our training,” he stated, underscoring the professionalism and preparedness of Indian Army personnel.
