Meet Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari: Fearless BSF Officer Who Forced Pakistani Troops to Retreat
A third-generation officer from Uttarakhand who led an all-women team in direct combat along the International Border, silencing three enemy posts and earning the highest recognition from the Chief of the Army Staff.
In the tense days following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack, as India launched Operation Sindoor — a series of precision strikes and border responses against Pakistan — one name emerged as a symbol of courage, leadership, and historic progress for women in India’s security forces: Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari of the Border Security Force (BSF).
Stationed at a forward post in the Pargwal area of Jammu’s Akhnoor sector, just 150 metres from the International Border, she commanded her troops with exceptional resolve. For 72 continuous hours, under intense cross-border firing, her unit engaged and silenced three forward hostile Pakistani posts, forcing the enemy to retreat and dismantling threats in real time. Her actions not only secured the border but also marked her as the first woman BSF officer to lead troops in direct combat along the International Border.
A Legacy of Service
Neha Bhandari carries forward a proud family tradition of national service. Hailing from Uttarakhand, she is a third-generation officer in India’s uniformed forces. Her grandfather served in the Indian Army, while both her father and mother have served with distinction in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
In her own words, she has expressed deep pride in this heritage: “My grandfather served in the Army. My father was in the CRPF. My mother is also in the CRPF. I feel proud to follow in their footsteps.”
This legacy of duty and discipline prepared her for the ultimate test of leadership on one of the world’s most sensitive borders.
Joining the BSF and Early Service
Neha Bhandari joined the Border Security Force as an Assistant Commandant nearly three years before the events of May 2025. She was posted to the strategically vital Akhnoor sector in Jammu and Kashmir, where she commanded a company responsible for guarding sensitive forward posts along the International Border.
Her posting placed her in direct proximity to Pakistani positions — a role demanding constant vigilance, tactical acumen, and the ability to lead under extreme pressure. By early 2025, she had established herself as a capable and respected officer, ready to shoulder greater responsibilities when the situation escalated.
Operation Sindoor: Leadership Under Fire
Following the Pahalgam attack that claimed innocent lives, India initiated Operation Sindoor to deliver a strong and precise response. BSF units along the Jammu frontier were placed on high alert, tasked with preventing infiltration, retaliating to provocations, and maintaining the sanctity of the International Border.
Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari was at the forefront. Commanding a forward-deployed company in the Akhnoor-Pargwal sector, she directed operations from a position offering “eyeball-to-eyeball” contact with the enemy.
Her unit engaged three aggressive Pakistani forward posts across the zero line. Using all available weapons with high and flat trajectory fire, her troops pinned down the enemy, forced them to abandon their positions, and neutralised the threat. The posts were effectively silenced and decimated.
She later recounted the intensity of the operation with characteristic composure: “I had three posts falling in my area. I pinned down the people at all three hostile locations. We hit them with every weapon we had. They were forced to flee their posts.”
She further emphasised the high morale that sustained her team: “The ‘josh’ was quite high. Everyone among us gave their best, because everything we did was for the country and its honour.”
Her responsibilities extended beyond direct engagement. As she stated: “During Operation Sindoor, I was commanding a company deployed at the IB. Our responsibility was to stop any infiltration, give a befitting reply to Pakistan and keep the International Border safe. We fulfilled all responsibilities well.”
Historic All-Women Team in Combat
What made Neha Bhandari’s leadership particularly groundbreaking was the composition of her team. She led a group that included six women BSF constables who manned critical gun positions at the forward posts. Reports describe this as an all-women team of seven personnel holding two vital frontline posts for three days and nights under sustained pressure.
This deployment represented a historic first: the first instance of women personnel from the BSF engaging in sustained direct combat roles along the International Border. Far from being a token presence, these women demonstrated the same operational proficiency and courage as their male counterparts — a fact Neha Bhandari and her team proved decisively.
Her leadership shattered long-held perceptions and opened new chapters in the integration of women into frontline combat duties within India’s paramilitary forces.
National Recognition: The Commendation Disc
On 30 May 2025, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, personally felicitated Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari in Jammu. He awarded her the prestigious Commendation Disc for her “exceptional courage and operational proficiency” during Operation Sindoor.
The official statement issued by BSF Jammu read: “On 30 May 2025, COAS General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, felicitated Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari of BSF Jammu with the Commendation Disc for her exceptional courage and operational proficiency during Operation SINDOOR. She gallantly commanded a forward deployed BSF company under challenging conditions.”
This rare honour, coming directly from the Army Chief, underscored the significance of her contribution not only to border security but also to the evolving narrative of women’s leadership in India’s defence and security apparatus.

A Symbol of Courage, Leadership, and Change
Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari’s story transcends the events of Operation Sindoor. It stands as a powerful testament to the capabilities of women officers in high-stakes operational environments. Her calm command under fire, her ability to inspire an all-women team in one of the most volatile sectors, and her unwavering commitment to duty have made her an inspiration for aspiring officers and a source of national pride.
In an era where India continues to expand opportunities for women in the armed forces and paramilitary organisations, Neha Bhandari’s actions provide concrete proof that courage, competence, and leadership know no gender.
She has often reflected on the honour of her posting with quiet determination: “I feel proud to be manning a post along the International Border with my troops… It’s an honour to command a post so close to the international border along with my troops.”

Conclusion
From the hills of Uttarakhand to the bunkers of Akhnoor, Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari has embodied the finest traditions of the Indian security forces. Her fearless leadership during Operation Sindoor — forcing Pakistani troops to retreat from three forward posts and holding the line for 72 critical hours — will be remembered as a defining moment in the history of women’s participation in frontline border operations.
As India honours its brave soldiers, Neha Bhandari stands tall as a modern exemplar of valour, professionalism, and trailblazing spirit. Her Commendation Disc is not merely an award; it is a recognition of a new chapter being written in the annals of India’s defence forces — one in which women officers lead from the front, without hesitation or compromise.
