Meet Ann Rose: As Her Father Retires from the Navy, She Graduates from NDA

On April 30, 2025, Commander M.P. Mathew bid farewell to the Indian Navy, closing a proud and decorated chapter of service to the nation. Exactly a month later, on May 30, 2025, his daughter Ann Rose marched forward into history — graduating from the National Defence Academy (NDA) as part of its 148th course and the first-ever batch of women cadets to pass out from the prestigious institution.
This heartwarming story is not just about a father and daughter. It is about generations of commitment, courage, and character — passed down like a torch from one proud sailor to his determined daughter.

An alumna of Navy Children School, Kochi, Ann Rose grew up not only hearing stories of valour and duty but witnessing them firsthand. Inspired by her father's uniform, values, and quiet strength, she set her sights on the armed forces early. Despite knowing the challenges of a career in uniform, especially for women, she pursued her dream with unshakable resolve.

When the Supreme Court opened the doors of NDA to women in 2021, Ann saw her chance. She prepared relentlessly, cleared one of India’s toughest entrance exams, and marched into NDA in 2022 as part of its historic 148th course.
Three years of rigorous training—physically, mentally, and emotionally—moulded her into a leader, ready to take on the mantle her father once wore. And on 30th May 2025, she passed out from NDA’s hallowed Khetrapal Parade Ground under the watchful eyes of the Sahyadris, just weeks after her father’s retirement ceremony.
From saluting the flag on a naval ship to being saluted on parade by her juniors, the journey of this family is a testament to what it means to serve with pride and purpose.
