MARCOS Commando and Shaurya Chakra Awardee Amit Singh Rana Killed in Himachal Pradesh Road Accident

Amit Singh Rana, a Shaurya Chakra awardee and Indian Navy MARCOS commando, has tragically died in a road accident in Himachal Pradesh. Hailing from the Kangra district, the decorated commando was part of the Indian Navy’s elite Marine Commandos and gained national recognition for his bravery during counter-terrorism missions in Jammu and Kashmir.

The news of his death has deeply saddened the defense community, as well as veterans, serving personnel, and citizens throughout the country. Rana was highly esteemed for his bravery in confronting terrorists at close quarters during high-risk operations, exhibiting extraordinary courage in the line of duty.

A native of Laharu village in Jwalamukhi tehsil, Kangra district, Amit Singh Rana came from a family with a strong tradition of military service. Continuing this legacy, he joined the Indian Navy as a sailor, later advancing to become a Leading Mechanical Engineer before being chosen for MARCOS, the Indian Navy's special forces unit.

MARCOS personnel undergo rigorous training for operations in challenging military environments, including maritime, amphibious, riverine, and land-based missions. Rana's career exemplified the professionalism and valor for which the Marine Commandos are renowned.

Rana’s gallantry came to the forefront during his service in Jammu and Kashmir as part of Operation Rakshak. The Indian Navy's official citation highlighted his outstanding performance in Operation Danna and Operation Shok Baba, successfully eliminating eight foreign terrorists.

During Operation Danna, Rana served alongside Lt Cdr Mahesh Kumar. In intense close-quarter combat, he bravely shot one terrorist at extremely close range while providing cover for the officer, who neutralized another terrorist, resulting in the recovery of warlike stores.

Rana displayed exceptional bravery during Operation Shok Baba between September 20 and 21, 2018. Conducted with 14 Rashtriya Rifles, this operation involved a cordon-and-search mission in the Shok Baba area, where terrorists had taken refuge in a mud house and cow shed. Despite employing heavy-caliber weapons and grenades, the terrorists remained hidden.

At a critical juncture, Rana and his team volunteered to approach the cow shed with a heavy improvised explosive device. Under intense enemy fire, and with cover from fellow MARCOS personnel, he successfully placed the IED at the cow shed, leading to the destruction of the structure and the elimination of three terrorists hiding inside. The citation noted that while under fire, Rana emerged unharmed due to the close cover fire from his buddy.

The Indian Navy citation lauded Rana for his "exemplary courage, tactical acumen, and gallantry of very high order," crediting him with playing a crucial role in neutralizing terrorists, strategically placing demolition charges under heavy fire, and maintaining pressure on the terrorists to advance the operation. His contribution was also acknowledged by the Indian Army.

For his gallant actions in perilous conditions, Amit Singh Rana, with Service No. 231243-B, received the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award. The Ministry of Defence announced the award on August 14, 2019, as part of the Independence Day gallantry awards for naval personnel.
