Maj Gen Dhananjay Joshi Assumes Command of Junior Leaders Wing, Belagavi

Major General Dhananjay Joshi, AVSM, VSM, has taken over as the Commander of the Junior Leaders Wing (JLW) in Belagavi, an esteemed training institution of the Indian Army. This transition signifies an important shift within the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), as Lt Gen Devendra Sharma, PVSM, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of ARTRAC, conveyed his congratulations and best wishes to Maj Gen Joshi on his new role.

Maj Gen Joshi replaces Major General Rakesh Manocha, SM, VSM, who retired on July 31, 2026, after dedicating over 36 years of outstanding service to the nation. Throughout his tenure, Maj Gen Manocha significantly contributed to enhancing leadership training and professional military education for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs), integral to the Indian Army's operational success.

Maj Gen Joshi's appointment follows his national recognition for operational excellence as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Victor Force in Kashmir. His leadership during this period was instrumental in executing successful counter-terrorism operations and improving security force strategies after the tragic terrorist attack at Baisaran in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which resulted in 26 fatalities, including 25 tourists.

In response to the Pahalgam attack, the Indian Army, along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), revamped their operational tactics by focusing resources and intelligence in South Kashmir. During a joint press conference in May 2025 with Kashmir Inspector General of Police V.K. Birdi and CRPF Inspector General Mitesh Kumar, Maj Gen Joshi elaborated on the revised strategy, emphasizing targeted efforts based on intelligence that suggested terrorist relocation to higher forested areas post-snowmelt.

This strategic overhaul led to two successful counter-terrorism operations in May 2025, in Shopian and Pulwama districts. The first operation in Shopian's Kellar area resulted in the elimination of three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, while the second operation in Tral, Pulwama, neutralised three Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists. These coordinated operations, which eliminated six terrorists in total, exemplified the efficacy of joint intelligence-driven actions by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF.

After these operations, Maj Gen Joshi underscored the necessity of adapting military strategies to evolving operational scenarios. He noted that domination patrols were deployed in high-altitude forested zones following intelligence on increasing terrorist movements post-winter. These operations, conducted in both mountainous terrains and populated regions, showcased the flexibility and cooperation of security forces in countering emerging threats.

His leadership during this critical period coincided with the broader national security framework under Operation Sindoor, aimed at intensifying counter-terrorism efforts and enhancing preparedness across various fronts. The successful operations in South Kashmir were viewed as a fundamental aspect of the security forces' comprehensive response to rising terrorist activities.

As he takes charge of the Junior Leaders Wing in Belagavi, Maj Gen Joshi is tasked with shaping future junior military leaders. The institution plays a vital role in training JCOs and NCOs in leadership, tactical planning, decision-making, instructional methodologies, and operational management, equipping them with the necessary skills to lead effectively across various operational spectrums.

The Junior Leaders Wing operates under the Army Training Command and is acclaimed for developing proficient battlefield leaders capable of functioning in complex, technologically advanced combat environments. The institution continually updates its curriculum to integrate recent operational lessons, emerging technologies, and modern warfare concepts.

Maj Gen Joshi's extensive operational experience, particularly in conducting counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, is anticipated to bring valuable battlefield insights to the training programs. His firsthand expertise in intelligence-led operations, joint force coordination, and operational leadership will aid in preparing junior leaders to confront the challenges of modern warfare.

This transition also marks the end of Major General Rakesh Manocha's illustrious military career. After serving the Indian Army for more than 35 years, he leaves behind a legacy of professional excellence, institutional growth, and unwavering dedication to military education.

With Major General Dhananjay Joshi at the helm, the Junior Leaders Wing embarks on a new chapter under an experienced operational commander whose proven leadership in counter-terrorism and commitment to excellence are expected to further bolster the Indian Army's mission to cultivate skilled, adaptable, and future-ready military leaders.
