Lt Gen Harsh Chhibber Highlights Digitalisation and AI for Future Indian Army Operations

Lieutenant General Harsh Chhibber, Director General Information Systems (DG IS), visited Headquarters Central Command in Lucknow on a day devoted to the Indian Army’s digital and artificial intelligence ambitions, and held discussions with Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command.

During the visit, Lt Gen Chhibber addressed officers at Headquarters Central Command and also connected with officers from formations through a hybrid interaction on the theme “Digital and AI Transformation in the Indian Army”. The session centred on how digital technologies and artificial intelligence are increasingly shaping the future battlefield and influencing the way military organisations plan and operate.

In his address, the DG IS spoke about the practical impact of emerging technologies on military effectiveness. He said digital tools and AI-enabled systems can improve the speed and quality of decision-making, while also strengthening operational effectiveness. He pointed to the expanding volume of data available to modern forces and said that better use of advanced systems can enhance situational awareness and help improve mission preparedness.

Lt Gen Chhibber also stressed that information dominance is becoming a central feature of modern warfare. As battlefields grow more technology-driven and information-intensive, the ability to collect, process, analyse and use information effectively is emerging as a key source of operational advantage.

The interaction placed similar emphasis on the need for the Indian Army to adopt innovation and digitalisation across both its operational and organisational structures. According to the discussion, AI-enabled capabilities, emerging technologies and digitally integrated systems can help commanders and formations respond more effectively to complex and fast-changing operational challenges.

The address also highlighted the importance of building a technology-oriented mindset among personnel. Lt Gen Chhibber underlined that continuous adaptation, innovation and familiarity with emerging technologies will be increasingly important as warfare changes and begins to incorporate autonomous systems, data-driven decision-making and advanced digital networks more deeply.

The visit to Headquarters Central Command reinforced the Army’s stated focus on technological transformation and the development of future-ready capabilities. The emphasis on digitalisation and AI reflects a broader effort to build a more technologically empowered force that can maintain operational effectiveness and readiness in an evolving battlefield environment.
