Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Evaluates Agniveer Training at Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, who commands the Southern Command, visited the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC) in Belagavi today. This visit underscored the Indian Army's focus on modernizing military training and integrating innovation. The event highlighted the advancement of the Agniveer training program, which is in line with the Army’s “Decade of Transformation” strategy.

During the visit, Lt Gen Seth inspected infrastructure updates and observed the rigorous training of Agniveers, recruits enlisted under a new manpower initiative. He addressed the recruits, emphasizing the need for adaptability, resilience, and technological expertise to meet modern military requirements. He praised the Centre for its enhanced training facilities and urged the recruits to embody professionalism and discipline as essential qualities for a soldier prepared for future challenges.

This visit occurs amid a broader movement within the armed forces towards indigenization and capability improvement. Ministry of Defence records show a substantial increase in the Army’s procurement through the Government-e-Marketplace (GeM) platform, from Rs 21 crore in 2017 to over Rs 15,433 crore in 2023–24. This marks a crucial step towards achieving self-reliance in defense as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. A RAND Corporation study has also highlighted the significance of AI and tech-based military readiness, a direction the Army is increasingly pursuing.

Lt Gen Seth also engaged with retired veterans, honoring several distinguished ex-servicemen from the area. He recognized the important role veterans play in motivating younger generations and fostering regimental pride. The Maratha Light Infantry, established in 1800, boasts a rich history of service and courage, including the 1918 Battle of Sharqat, where the 114th Mahrattas earned 28 awards for bravery.
The Southern Command leader reiterated that such visits help develop training strategies and promote innovation at the grassroots level. With initiatives like the Agniveer scheme and targeted infrastructure improvements, the Army continues to align itself with the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, striving to build a professional, agile, and technologically advanced force prepared for future challenges.
