Lieutenant General Sharma Evaluates Preparedness of Northern Command's Whiteknight Air Defence Brigade

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army's Northern Command, carried out an extensive review of the Whiteknight Air Defence Brigade to assess its readiness against emerging security challenges along India's northern borders. This evaluation follows increased vigilance due to recent cross-border drone activities and the successful implementation of Operation Sindoor.
During the visit, Lt Gen Sharma praised the unit for its effective and measured contribution to Operation Sindoor, which was a targeted operation that strategically impaired terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control. This operation highlighted the operational harmony between India's air defence and intelligence systems, with advanced platforms such as the S-400 Triumf and Akash surface-to-air missile systems playing a crucial role in thwarting aerial threats and neutralizing hostile drones.

The Whiteknight Corps, based in Nagrota since 1972, has been pivotal in conducting counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Lt Gen Sharma’s inspection encompassed various activities, including direct assessments of the latest air defence assets, electronic warfare modules, and readiness exercises. As a former Director General of Information Warfare, he also engaged in discussions with troops and unit commanders on incorporating psychological operations and cyber capabilities into air defence strategies.
The operational review conducted on June 20 confirmed the brigade’s heightened state of alertness, adaptability, and technological expertise. The brigade's multi-layered defence system, supported by mobile radar units, interceptor batteries, and real-time coordination with central command structures, was specifically praised for its deterrence capability in high-conflict areas.

Beyond assessing military readiness, Lt Gen Sharma interacted with local veterans and their families as part of the Indian Army’s ongoing outreach program under the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare. The Whiteknight formation remains integral in assuring both border security and veteran engagement in this strategically crucial region.
Lt Gen Sharma’s visit underscored the Indian Army’s dedication to modernizing its military posture in northern India. His focus on integrating various domains—from kinetic firepower to information warfare—indicates a doctrinal evolution in India's approach to countering hybrid threats. The Whiteknight Air Defence Brigade, with its established record and renewed focus, remains a vital component in India's defensive strategy.
