Lieutenant Anni Nehra: Recipient of the Sword of Honour at the Indian Military Academy

On June 14, 2025, under the iconic Chetwode Building at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, Anni Nehra, a 21-year-old from Rewari, Haryana, made history. Leading the parade with exceptional pride and precision, he was awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour, an accolade given to the best all-round cadet of the Spring Term 2025.

Lieutenant Nehra, who has been commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment, was also awarded the Silver Medal for securing second place in the overall order of merit. These honors are the result of years of determination and a strong familial tradition of military service.

Lieutenant Nehra represents the third generation in his family to serve in the armed forces. His grandfather was part of the 9 Jat Regiment, and his father, Devinder Nehra, served as a Havildar in the 7 Jat Regiment. Inspired by family stories of bravery and discipline, Anni was determined to wear the uniform. "This award is not just mine; it belongs to my family, my instructors, and the values passed down through generations," he said, expressing humility and pride.

However, Anni Nehra's path was not without challenges. As a cadet at Rashtriya Military School in Belgaum, he struggled with adapting to the demanding military lifestyle. Initially overwhelmed by the physical and emotional demands, he considered quitting.

But a conversation with his father altered his perspective. Encouraged to persevere and adapt, this turning point fueled his resolve and guided him through the toughest phases of his training, shaping him into a leader.

In 2021, Anni joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) as part of its 146th Course. Over the next three years, his transformation was evident. He attained the high responsibility of Battalion Cadet Captain (BCC), highlighting his leadership capabilities. At the NDA’s Passing Out Parade in May 2024, he was awarded the President’s Bronze Medal for achieving third place in the overall order of merit.

Each achievement mirrored his evolution from a doubtful boy to a young man who led his peers with excellence.

Following his NDA graduation, Anni joined IMA, the cradle of Indian Army leadership. His exceptional performance persisted, earning him the role of Academy Cadet Adjutant (ACA), a testament to the trust placed in his discipline and leadership.

The Spring Term 2025 Passing Out Parade marked a significant moment in his life. Among 451 Gentlemen Cadets, including 32 from allied nations, Anni Nehra was chosen as the recipient of the Sword of Honour. Presented by Reviewing Officer Lieutenant General BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo of the Sri Lanka Army, the award recognized his unparalleled all-round performance.

As his mother, Suman Devi, watched with pride, she noted, “He grew up watching both his father and grandfather serve in the Army. That inspired him.” Continuing the family tradition, her younger son is currently a cadet at NDA, expected to join IMA soon.

Lieutenant Anni Nehra’s story is a testament to perseverance and resilience. From a struggling school cadet to the leading Gentleman Cadet of IMA’s Spring Term 2025, his journey inspires countless young Indians aspiring to serve.

As Lieutenant Nehra steps into his role in the Indian Army, carrying both a gleaming sword and a storied legacy, he embodies the hopes of a nation and lights the path for future generations.
