ISRO Astronaut Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair Elevated to Air Commodore in Indian Air Force

New Delhi, April 9, 2026 — Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, a distinguished test pilot and astronaut-designate with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has been promoted to Air Commodore in the Indian Air Force (IAF). Effective April 7, 2026, this promotion recognizes Nair's outstanding service as a fighter pilot, flight instructor, and a crucial contributor to India's inaugural human spaceflight mission, Gaganyaan.

Air Commodore Nair is among the four astronauts, known as Gaganyatris, undergoing intense training for Gaganyaan, ISRO's prominent initiative to send Indian astronauts into low-Earth orbit. His promotion underscores his exemplary operational achievements within the IAF and highlights the strategic integration of military aviation expertise into India's expanding human spaceflight efforts. This development comes as Gaganyaan preparations accelerate, with the crew recently completing Mission Mitra, a high-altitude simulation in Ladakh to test human limits in extreme conditions.

Distinguished Military Career and Expertise
Born on August 26, 1976, in Nemmara, Palakkad district of Kerala, Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair graduated from the National Defence Academy and the Air Force Academy, where he was awarded the Sword of Honour for outstanding performance. Commissioned into the IAF’s fighter stream on December 19, 1998, he has amassed over 3,000 flying hours across various aircraft, including the MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Antonov An-32, Dornier Do 228, and the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI. As a Category-A qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot, he has led a Su-30 squadron and held instructional and leadership roles, serving as Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College and the Flying Instructors’ School in Tambaram. Additionally, he topped his international officers’ class at the United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College in Alabama.

For his gallantry and meritorious service, Air Commodore Nair was honored with the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award, during the 2026 Republic Day celebrations.

Pivotal Role in India’s Human Spaceflight Programme
Selected in 2019 for the inaugural Gaganyaan training cohort, Air Commodore Nair received specialized astronaut training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia and at ISRO’s Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru. He has contributed significantly to mission planning, crew systems evaluation, and safety simulations, all critical for the success of India's first crewed orbital mission. In August 2024, he was named the backup astronaut for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), a private crewed flight to the International Space Station, supporting Prime Crew member Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla. His training included sessions at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The promotion signifies the IAF's growing institutional backing for the human spaceflight programme and the seamless cooperation between the armed forces and ISRO. As India gears up to join the select group of nations capable of independent crewed space missions, the advancement of senior officials like Air Commodore Nair enhances operational readiness and leadership within the astronaut corps.

Personal Life and Broader Context
Air Commodore Nair is married to Indian actress Lenaa, with their marriage taking place in January 2024. His journey from a fighter pilot to a senior-ranking astronaut-designate exemplifies the combination of discipline, technical skill, and adaptability required in the demanding field of human space exploration.

This achievement comes at a crucial juncture for Gaganyaan, which aims to position India as a key player in crewed spaceflight. Officials have noted that recognitions like these not only honor individual excellence but also reinforce the nation's commitment to developing indigenous capabilities in aerospace technology and human spaceflight.

As Air Commodore Nair continues his training and contributions to Gaganyaan, his promotion stands as a testament to the quality of India’s astronaut candidates and the country’s advancement in space exploration. Further updates on the mission timeline are expected from ISRO in the coming months.
