Israel Conducts Airstrikes in Doha Targeting Hamas Leaders

On Tuesday, Israel announced it had launched airstrikes in Doha, the capital of Qatar, as part of Operation Summit of Fire, targeting key figures within the Hamas leadership. The attacks resulted in loud explosions and a plume of black smoke over parts of the city, though the extent of casualties remains unknown.
IDF Confirms Precision Strikes
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) issued a statement indicating the operation's focus on top Hamas leaders. “For years, these members of the Hamas leadership have orchestrated terrorist operations, including the October 7, 2023 massacre, and continue to manage the war against Israel,” the statement explained.
An Israeli military representative informed AFP that the strikes specifically aimed at Hamas officials residing in Doha. This action aligns with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir’s recent vow to target Hamas leaders residing abroad.
Qatar Condemns ‘Cowardly Attack’
Qatar, which has been a longstanding host to Hamas’s political bureau and has facilitated discussions between Hamas and Israel, strongly criticized the airstrikes. Majed al-Ansari, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, labeled it a “cowardly Israeli attack” and a blatant breach of international laws and norms. He cautioned that the assault threatened the safety of both Qatari citizens and foreign residents in the area. Qatar announced that investigations are in progress and insisted it would not tolerate any actions compromising its sovereignty.
Possible Impact on Ceasefire Talks
The airstrikes threaten to derail ongoing negotiations concerning a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 assault. Experts suggest that the attack could complicate Qatar’s role as a mediator and further increase regional tensions.
Israeli Leadership Responds
Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s Finance Minister, praised the operation, asserting that “terrorists have no immunity anywhere in the world.” He described the mission as a “right decision and perfect execution” by the IDF and security agencies.
Additionally, a White House official, cited by AFP, confirmed that Israel had notified Washington about the planned airstrikes in advance.
This development signifies a new and unpredictable phase in the conflict, widening Israel’s military efforts beyond Gaza to include international locations where Hamas leaders reside.
