Indian Vessel Virat 1 Sinks Near Oman; All 14 Crew Members Safely Rescued

An India-flagged mechanised sailing vessel, the MSV Virat 1, sank off the coast of Oman on June 14 following an engine malfunction that left the vessel stranded and subsequently led to a large-scale international rescue mission.

The incident unfolded approximately 80 nautical miles east of Ras Al Hadd, Oman. The vessel, which had 14 Indian crew members on board, reportedly suffered from a mechanical issue before it began to flood and eventually sank.

According to the Indian Embassy in Muscat, the vessel encountered engine problems while at sea, compelling the crew to abandon the ship as conditions worsened.

After distress signals were sent out, Omani authorities organized a search and rescue operation aided by the United States Navy and nearby commercial vessels in the area.

The US Navy deployed a P-8 maritime patrol aircraft to the scene after learning of the vessel's distress. The aircraft dropped a life raft near the sinking ship and observed the evacuation to ensure the crew's safety.

Support was also coordinated by the US Navy from MV Jabal Ali 9, a merchant vessel registered under the flag of St Kitts and Nevis, which was operating in the vicinity. As Virat 1 continued to take on water, the 14 crew members successfully boarded the life raft before being rescued.

An official statement from the Indian Embassy in Muscat confirmed that the vessel experienced engine failure and that all crew members had safely abandoned the sinking ship.

The embassy noted that the rescue operation was being managed by Omani authorities with the help of vessels nearby the incident site.

The rescue operation was successful, ensuring that all 14 Indian sailors were brought to safety despite the loss of the vessel. Authorities are expected to continue investigating the circumstances of the incident, while the Indian mission maintains contact with local authorities regarding the care and support of the rescued crew members.

This incident underscores the critical role of international maritime cooperation in addressing sea emergencies and safeguarding seafarers operating along busy shipping routes in the region.
