Indian Navy Sailor, Wife and Two Children Found Dead at Mumbai’s Navy Nagar Quarters
Mumbai, August 16, 2026: An Indian Navy sailor, his wife and their two young children were found dead in their residence in Navy Nagar, Colaba, in south Mumbai, in an incident that has triggered a police and naval investigation. Preliminary findings suggest the sailor died by hanging, while the wife and children are suspected to have died by poisoning.
The deaths came to light on Saturday night, August 15, after police and naval security personnel were alerted when the family did not respond to calls. Officers from the Cuffe Parade police station, also referred to as Cuff Parade, said the sailor was discovered hanging inside the government quarters. The bodies of his wife and the two children, aged three years and two months, were also found at the residence.
Preliminary assessment points to suicide and poisoning
Police have stressed that the findings so far are only prima facie and that the final cause of death for each person will be established only after post-mortem and forensic examination. A police official said the current assessment indicates that the sailor died by suicide, while the wife and children may have been poisoned.
In its official update, Mumbai Police said: “An incident has been reported from Navy Nagar where a sailor along with his wife and 2 kids (2 month and 3 years) have died at their residence. Prima facie he has committed suicide by hanging, and the reason of death of the wife and children seems to be poisoning as per prima facie investigation.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Kalwaniya also said the initial investigation pointed to hanging in the sailor’s case and poisoning in the case of the wife and children. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic teams have inspected the site. Police are looking into all possible angles, including the sequence of events and any circumstances that may have led to the deaths.
The identities of the deceased have not been made public. Investigators are also recording statements from family members, neighbours and other relevant witnesses as part of the inquiry.
Navy confirms incident and extends assistance
The Indian Navy confirmed the deaths in a statement and said it was cooperating with the investigation. “In an unfortunate incident at Navy Nagar, Colaba, an Indian Navy sailor along with his wife and 2 children have been found dead at their residence on 15 Aug 26. Investigation is in progress by the Police and the Indian Navy is extending all possible assistance towards the same,” the Navy said.
Navy Nagar is a restricted, high-security cantonment area that houses naval personnel and their families. Because the deaths occurred in official residential quarters, the case has drawn close attention and prompted coordination between civil police and naval authorities.
Probe continues as police secure the scene
The discovery on Independence Day has added to the shock surrounding the case. While some early reports initially focused on the sailor and the children, later updates from multiple agencies, including PTI and ANI, confirmed that the wife was also among the dead.
Police have secured the premises and say no motive has been established at this stage. Investigators have not ruled out any possibility while they await post-mortem results and continue forensic analysis. The Navy has reiterated that it is extending full cooperation to the civil investigation.
The case remains under investigation, with further clarity expected once the post-mortem reports are received and the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the sailor and his family are pieced together.
