Indian Navy Inducts Sub-Lieutenant Aastha Poonia as First Female Fighter Pilot

In a historic development for India's defense sector, Sub-Lieutenant Aastha Poonia has become the first woman to be inducted as a fighter pilot in the Indian Navy. This significant milestone was achieved during the Second Basic Hawk Conversion Course graduation ceremony, which took place on July 3 at INS Dega in Visakhapatnam.

During the ceremony, the esteemed ‘Wings of Gold’ were presented to Sub-Lieutenant Poonia and Lieutenant Atul Kumar Dhull by Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air). The event was attended by senior naval officers, instructors, and the graduates' families, highlighting its significance.

The induction of Sub-Lieutenant Poonia into the fighter pilot stream marks a crucial advancement in the Navy’s efforts towards gender inclusion and achieving operational excellence.

The Indian Navy has reported a 15 percent increase in the recruitment of female officers since 2020, with more women taking on roles in both combat and technical branches. This progress aligns with India's broader "Nari Shakti" initiative and reflects an international trend towards enhancing gender diversity within military forces.

Experts in military strategy suggest that the inclusion of women in fighter and strategic positions fosters innovation, adaptability, and greater mission effectiveness, as diverse perspectives enhance operational planning and execution.

The graduation event at INS Dega was more than a recognition of technical proficiency and dedicated training; it was a declaration of progress. The Indian Navy is evolving into a modern, inclusive, and combat-ready maritime force that remains dedicated to national security and equal opportunities.
