Indian Astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla's Remarkable Journey: From NDA Exam on Sister's Wedding Day to Space Exploration

In 2001, during the wedding festivities of his older sister, a teenage Shubhanshu Shukla quietly left his home in Lucknow, dressed in his wedding outfit. His sudden absence during such a significant family event caused concern among relatives and left his father particularly distressed. Hours later, around 11:00 pm, he returned on a bicycle, breathless and exhausted, and without offering an explanation, asked, "Now tell me what to do," before resuming his participation in the celebrations.

For some time, Shubhanshu's family remained in the dark about his mysterious disappearance. The truth emerged only after he passed the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination; he had secretly left to sit for the test, which was the first step toward fulfilling his ambition of serving the nation.

Shubhanshu had not only kept his intentions hidden, but he also borrowed money from a friend to pay for the application. His sister, Nidhi Mishra, later shared the family's mix of surprise and pride when they learned that his absence during the wedding was driven by a higher purpose.

Inspired by the Kargil War, Shubhanshu had set his sights on joining the Indian Air Force.
