Indian Army Inaugurates First Dedicated Freight Train on USBRL, Boosting Military Logistics and Kashmiri Economy
In a significant advancement for military operations and the economy of Kashmir, the Indian Army has introduced its inaugural dedicated freight train on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). Operating between BD Bari and Anantnag from September 12 to 13, the train carried 753 metric tonnes of Advance Winter Stocking (AWS) to ensure that frontline units are adequately prepared for the forthcoming winter season.
This initiative marks a strategic transformation in the Army's logistics for winter, moving away from the conventional convoys that frequently encountered delays due to snow-blocked mountain passes. By establishing a rail-based supply route, the Army has improved the speed, efficiency, and dependability of operations, thus enhancing their readiness even in severe weather conditions.
As the freight train made its return, it transported Kashmiri apples to markets throughout India, thus providing local fruit growers with improved and more secure access to national supply chains. For many years, these farmers faced transportation challenges due to highway closures on NH-44, but the Army's logistics initiative now serves as a crucial support for the region's economy.
Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah commended this development and suggested the introduction of special refrigerated cargo trains to enhance the transport of perishable goods. He expressed his gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and engaged in discussions with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari regarding necessary road-logistics improvements to stabilize supply chains for the benefit of growers.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also inaugurated the first dedicated parcel train from Budgam to Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar, underscoring the transformative effects of rail freight on Kashmir's horticulture industry.
Beyond the logistical advantages, this freight train serves as a testament to India's resilience and national unity. It not only bolsters military readiness but also uplifts Kashmir's economy, exemplifying the Army's dual commitment to national defense and socio-economic advancement.
