Indian Army Implements Custom SAMBHAV System for Secure Communication in Operation Sindoor

In a significant advancement toward secure and autonomous communication, the Indian Army has transitioned from using WhatsApp and similar platforms to employing its own SAMBHAV (Secure Army Mobile Bharat Version) system during Operation Sindoor. This move signifies a major effort to protect sensitive military communications using domestically developed technology.

SAMBHAV: Secure and Self-Reliant

SAMBHAV is a completely indigenous mobile communication platform built specifically for defense applications. Utilizing 5G technology, the system offers multi-layered encryption, safeguarding against eavesdropping. One of its primary features is M-Sigma, which facilitates the secure exchange of documents, images, and videos, positioning itself as a reliable substitute for WhatsApp within the Army.

Crucial Role in Operation Sindoor

General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, highlighted the critical role that SAMBHAV phones played in ensuring secure command and coordination during Operation Sindoor. He described the operation as a remarkable, intelligence-driven mission that combined conventional military power with cutting-edge technology, embodying a comprehensive national approach that included input from soldiers, commanders, scientists, and policymakers.

Strengthening Technological Sovereignty

Since the project’s inception, around 30,000 SAMBHAV handsets have been distributed by the Army. The network-agnostic system secures communications over public cellular networks through advanced encryption techniques. Plans are in place to further upgrade the system to bolster security and broaden its functionalities.

Expanding Strategic Use

In addition to its application in battlefield operations, SAMBHAV has been utilized in significant military discussions with China. The initiative is seen as a crucial step in the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat program, ensuring India's strategic autonomy and confidentiality in defense communications.

The implementation of SAMBHAV highlights the Army’s dedication to future-ready warfare, technological progress, and self-sufficiency in national security.
