Indian Army Conducts Third Stage Evaluation for Agniveers' Permanent Enlistment

The Indian Army has initiated the third phase of evaluation for Agniveer soldiers who were recruited in January 2023 through the Agnipath scheme. This important assessment is essential for determining which candidates will be eligible for permanent positions in the armed forces, with final selections anticipated by October 2026.
This phase includes approximately 3,000 Agniveers who participated in Operation Sindoor, India's strategic response to recent missile and drone attacks across the border. Their performance in operational roles, particularly in air defense, is being considered in the current assessments.
The ongoing evaluation is the third in a four-stage process outlined under the Agnipath scheme. Agniveers undergo testing at 31 weeks, 18 months, 30 months, and 42 months during their service. The third stage specifically evaluates physical fitness, drill performance, and weapon handling skills. To maintain fairness and impartiality, Agniveers are assessed by external teams rather than their own units.
Army officials highlight the system's transparency, noting that each Agniveer receives a mark sheet and has multiple test attempts—three in the initial phase and two in subsequent evaluations. Special arrangements are made for those stationed in remote or high-altitude areas, such as Siachen and Ladakh, who are temporarily attached to nearby Corps Battle Schools or rear units for evaluation.
Agniveers participating in Operation Sindoor utilized various advanced air defense systems, including Pechora, Schilka, OSA-AK, Strela, and Tunguska, as well as medium-range surface-to-air missile systems. They served in roles such as gunners, communication specialists, fire control operators, and heavy vehicle drivers, significantly aiding the successful deployment of the Akashteer air defense grid.
The Army has also established criteria for recognizing acts of bravery and sporting achievements. Agniveers receiving gallantry awards like the Sena Medal, Shaurya Chakra, Kirti Chakra, or Ashoka Chakra are automatically qualified for permanent recruitment. A mention in dispatch adds 25 bonus marks.
In terms of sports, Agniveers representing India at the international level are directly inducted permanently, while those competing in national and service-level competitions receive 10 and 6 bonus marks, respectively.
The first batch of Agniveers will complete their four-year service in January 2027. After final medical examinations, 25 percent of the batch, chosen based on overall merit, will secure permanent roles. Selected Agniveers will be notified within seven days of discharge and must report to their regimental centers within 30 days. Failure to report will result in disqualification, with the position being offered to the next candidate on the merit list.
