Indian Army Commemorates 78th Army Day with Historic Parade in Jaipur

The Indian Army celebrated its 78th Army Day with a remarkable and historic parade in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on January 15, 2026. The event honored the themes of bravery, sacrifice, technological advancements, and the enduring connection between the Army and the nation.

The day's events commenced with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Prerna Sthal. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi paid respects to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Representatives from the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy also placed wreaths, symbolizing joint cooperation among the armed forces.

For the first time, the Army Day Parade was held in the heart of a city, marking a departure from its usual location in New Delhi. The parade route, stretching from Akshay Patra Circle to Bombay Hospital along Mahal Road in Jaipur, was attended by over a lakh spectators. Organized by the South Western Command, the event brought Army traditions closer to the public, with previous editions held in Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Pune.

As Reviewing Officer, General Upendra Dwivedi took the salute during the parade. In a poignant moment, he awarded Sena Medals (Gallantry, Posthumous) to the Next of Kin of five soldiers who gave their lives for the nation.

The parade showcased the Indian Army's transformation into a technologically advanced and agile force. Over 30 entities participated in the march-past, including seven noteworthy contingents from regimental centers such as the Madras Regimental Centre and the Rajput Regimental Centre.

For the first time, Bhairav Battalion contingents from the Rajputana Rifles and Sikh Light Infantry were featured, highlighting the Army’s move towards leaner, high-impact units for rapid operations along borders.

The event also included a fly-past by Army helicopters, featuring the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Weapon System Integrated (WSI) platforms, and Apache attack helicopters.

A key highlight was the display of modern weapon systems, emphasizing indigenization and battlefield dominance. Featured equipment included T-90 and Arjun tanks, BMP-2 vehicles, and various artillery systems like K-9 Vajra and Pinaka.

Air defense and force protection systems such as the upgraded Schilka, Akash missile system, and L-70 guns were displayed, along with modern unmanned and counter-UAS technologies. Drones such as the Switch UAV and Bhairav Battalion-integrated systems showcased the Army’s readiness for next-generation warfare.

Platforms involved in Operation Sindoor, including BrahMos and M777 ULH, were also present, reinforcing the Army’s combat effectiveness.

The parade also celebrated India's cultural diversity with performances including Rajasthan’s Kalbelia and Gair dances, and a Chenda display by the Madras Regiment. Military bands, including the Nepal Army Band, added a musical dimension, reflecting the close defense relationship between India and Nepal.

The Motorcycle Display and Army Canine Show were crowd favorites, showcasing advanced riding skills and the crucial role of trained dogs in security operations.

During his address, the COAS stressed the importance of indigenization, positioning it as a strategic necessity. He spoke about the Army's ongoing transformation, focusing on agility and technological advancements, while emphasizing that technology should enhance, not replace, soldiers.

In the evening, Shaurya Sandhya was scheduled to take place at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, with attendees including Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. The program featured an enactment of Operation Sindoor, martial arts, a 1,000-drone show, and the virtual opening of multiple NAMAN Centres for veterans.

The 78th Army Day celebrations in Jaipur were a fitting tribute to the courage of Indian soldiers, the sacrifices of their families, and the Army’s unwavering commitment to national defense.
