The Indian Air Force (IAF) has embarked on a significant initiative to bolster the combat prowess of its elite Garud Commando Force. This effort involves the issuance of a Request for Information (RFI) for domestically produced man-portable loitering munitions. The intended acquisition aims to provide Garud commandos with a precision-strike capability that integrates real-time surveillance, target acquisition, and lethal engagement, enhancing their effectiveness in complex and contested operational settings.

Aligned with the Government's Make in India initiative, the RFI seeks homegrown solutions that fulfill the operational demands of the Air Force's special operations units. This move highlights the increasing significance of loitering munitions in modern warfare and emphasizes the Indian military's ongoing focus on indigenous defense technology and advanced battlefield capabilities.

The RFI specifies that the proposed loitering munition should be lightweight and man-portable, enabling small special forces teams to carry and deploy it without relying on heavy launch platforms or specialized logistical support. It is expected to have a minimum operational range of 40 kilometers, endure over two hours, and carry both High Explosive (HE) and High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warheads, allowing it to engage various targets, including enemy personnel, fortified positions, and armored vehicles.

Loitering munitions, sometimes known as "kamikaze drones," merge the functions of an unmanned aerial surveillance platform with a precision-guided weapon. After launch, they can remain airborne over a designated area, relaying real-time video and intelligence to operators. Upon identifying an appropriate target, the operator can direct the munition to strike with precision. If conditions change or the target is no longer valid, the mission can be aborted, offering commanders greater tactical flexibility and reducing the risk of collateral damage.

The introduction of such systems to the Garud Commando Force would mark a significant advancement in operational capability. Unlike traditional infantry weapons or anti-tank guided missiles, which generally have an effective range of four to five kilometers, the proposed loitering munition would enable commandos to detect, monitor, and engage targets at distances of more than 40 kilometers. This capability would allow special operations teams to independently conduct long-range precision strikes without immediate reliance on artillery, aircraft, or other supporting fire assets.

Beyond its strike capability, the loitering munition would provide Garud teams with valuable Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. Real-time aerial imagery would improve situational awareness during missions conducted deep behind enemy lines, enabling commanders to assess enemy movements, identify potential threats, and modify operational plans based on live battlefield information.

These capabilities are expected to be especially beneficial during operations in mountainous terrain, dense forests, urban environments, and other areas where conventional surveillance and fire support may be challenging to employ. The combination of extended range, precision engagement, and organic reconnaissance is anticipated to significantly enhance the effectiveness of special operations while minimizing risks to personnel and reducing collateral damage.

The Indian Air Force is also focusing on survivability in contested electromagnetic environments. The RFI specifies that the system should be operational in GPS-denied conditions and resilient against electronic warfare measures used by technologically advanced adversaries, reflecting the increasing importance of electronic warfare protection as modern battlefields become more contested in both physical and electromagnetic domains.

The Garud Commando Force, established in 2004, serves as the Indian Air Force's specialized special operations unit. Its duties include safeguarding critical air force installations, performing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, executing combat search and rescue missions, conducting special reconnaissance, and supporting strategic military operations. Over the years, the force has developed into one of India's premier special operations units, trained to operate across diverse operational environments.

Globally, loitering munitions have emerged as a defining technology of contemporary warfare. Recent conflicts, notably the Russia-Ukraine war, have demonstrated their effectiveness in destroying armored vehicles, artillery positions, command posts, and fortified defensive positions, while offering commanders unprecedented battlefield flexibility. Systems like the United States' Switchblade, Poland's Warmate, Türkiye's Kargu, and Israel's Harop have underscored the growing role of loitering munitions in modern military operations.

The Indian Armed Forces have increasingly embraced loitering munition technology, recognizing its value as a force multiplier across conventional and special operations. The latest IAF initiative aligns with the broader military modernization program focused on integrating unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, autonomous platforms, and precision-guided weapons into future battlefield operations.

By seeking indigenous man-portable loitering munitions, the Indian Air Force not only aims to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Garud Commando Force but also to support the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem. Once these advanced systems are integrated, they are expected to significantly enhance the Garuds' ability to conduct precision stand-off strikes, gather actionable intelligence, and execute high-risk missions with greater autonomy, flexibility, and effectiveness, further bolstering India's special operations capabilities in an increasingly technology-driven security environment.
