Indian Air Force and DRDO Successfully Test India's First Indigenous TARA Weapon System

The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have carried out the initial flight test of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system along the Odisha coast.

TARA represents India's pioneering indigenous glide weapon system engineered to convert unguided warheads into precision-guided munitions by utilizing a modular range extension kit. Created by the DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad in association with other laboratories, this system aims to improve the precision and efficacy of conventional armaments.

Incorporating advanced low-cost technologies, the weapon serves as a cost-efficient method for targeting ground-based threats. The development process saw substantial involvement from Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPP) and the Indian industry, with production activities already in progress.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the DRDO, IAF, and their industry partners on the successful test, hailing it as a critical achievement in bolstering India’s homegrown defense capabilities.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also praised the teams for reaching this achievement.

The successful trial represents a significant advancement in India's quest for self-sufficiency in defense technology, enhancing its precision strike capacity while decreasing reliance on costly foreign systems.
