India Secures Historic Bronze in World Military Shooting Championship 2025

In a significant achievement for Indian military sports, Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) Omkar Singh of the Indian Navy secured a bronze medal at the 55th CISM World Military Shooting Championship 2025. This event, held from June 23 to 29 at the Terningmoen shooting range in Elverum, Norway, featured top shooters from 38 nations.
Singh achieved the bronze in the 25m Center Fire Pistol event, marking India's first-ever medal at this esteemed military shooting competition. His success underscores the increasing prowess of Indian military athletes on the international stage.

Born on August 8, 1984, in Madhya Pradesh, Singh has consistently performed well in national shooting contests. His success is a testament to the Indian Navy’s focus on athletic development and disciplined training, which have fostered talents capable of excelling globally.
The Indian team at the championship included six shooters from the Armed Forces. Although all competitors performed admirably, Singh's exceptional showing was celebrated with the Indian flag being raised at the medal ceremony, marking a proud moment for the nation.

The championship, organized by the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM), is a premier event for military athletes worldwide. Experts credit India’s increasing success in these competitions to the rigorous training provided by military programs, which enhances physical and mental endurance. A study published in the Journal of Sports Sciences highlights that structured training significantly improves precision and resilience, essential in competitive shooting.
Despite facing challenges such as limited civilian shooting ranges and restricted access to training facilities for aspiring shooters, the Indian Armed Forces have continued to invest in talent development. Singh’s victory is anticipated to further boost institutional support for sports within the military and beyond.

The Ministry of Defence has praised the bronze medal as a historic milestone, highlighting the contribution of military athletes in enhancing India's global sports image. As celebrations proceed, attention shifts to how India can leverage this success to strengthen its presence in international shooting competitions.
