Squadron Leader Shivangi Singh, the Indian Air Force’s first and only woman Rafale fighter pilot, is now aiming beyond the skies — towards space. After making history in the cockpit of India’s most advanced fighter jet, the 29-year-old officer is hoping to become an astronaut as part of India’s upcoming manned space mission.

Shivangi’s journey began in her childhood when she visited the Air Force Museum in New Delhi. “That’s where my dream took flight,” she said, recalling how she stood mesmerized by fighter jets and knew she wanted to be a pilot.

Commissioned into the Indian Air Force after women were allowed into combat roles in 2015, Shivangi broke barriers by becoming the first woman to fly the French-made Rafale. In 2020, after a competitive selection process, she trained on advanced simulators with French instructors before eventually taking control of the jet herself.

Originally from Varanasi, Shivangi attributes her success to her family — especially her mother, who inspired her to be self-reliant and supported her ambitions every step of the way. “She didn’t just want me to study, she wanted me to be independent,” Shivangi said.

Now married to a fellow fighter pilot, she continues to serve at the forefront of India’s air defence. The IAF recently expanded its Rafale fleet by signing a new deal for 26 additional jets, reinforcing its air capabilities amidst rising tensions with Pakistan and China.

But Singh’s aspirations are far from over. She has applied for test pilot training and dreams of joining India’s space mission. “Flying a fighter jet was once considered a man’s job. I did it. Now I want to go further — I want to be an astronaut,” she said.

India now has over 1,600 women officers in the Air Force, with growing numbers of women in both combat and command roles. With women like Shivangi leading the way, the message is clear — the future of Indian aviation and space exploration is boldly inclusive.
