India Fast-Tracks Indigenous Strike Drone Development Amid Rising Use of Iran's Shahed Drones
The extensive deployment of Shahed-series drones by Iran in its conflict with Israel has led Indian defence strategists to hasten the advancement of their own long-range strike drone projects. This move acknowledges the rising significance of cost-effective unmanned systems in contemporary military engagements.
Sources within the defence sector indicate that India is intensifying the testing and development of its domestically produced strike drone initiatives, such as the Sheshnaag system and Project KAL, to bolster the nation's unmanned combat capabilities.
Shahed Drones Highlight New Warfare Model
In the Middle East conflict, Iran's use of cost-efficient Shahed drones has demonstrated their capability to travel vast distances and challenge air defence systems. These unmanned assaults have proven how low-cost drones can effectively target deep within enemy lines.
This situation has prompted a renewed effort within India's military circles to develop similar capabilities domestically.
Sheshnaag Strike Drone Undergoing Advanced Trials
The Sheshnaag-150 long-range strike drone from India, created by the Bengaluru-based defence startup Newspace Research Technologies (NRT), has recently been tested in highway launch trials. These trials aim to explore unconventional operational deployment methods.
Having taken its maiden flight roughly a year ago, the drone serves as a swarming attack platform with long-distance operational capabilities.
