Himachal CM Sukhvinder Sukhu Applauds Sandeep Lakhanpal's Advancement to Lieutenant Colonel

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu extended his congratulations on Thursday to Sandeep Lakhanpal, a resident of Hadeta Panchayat in Nadaun assembly constituency, Hamirpur district, following his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army.

The Chief Minister, who represents the Nadaun constituency in the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, conveyed this message through the state's Information and Public Relations Department. Sukhu emphasized the longstanding military tradition of the Lakhanpal family in his statement.

He remarked, "When the resolve to serve the nation becomes a value passed down through generations, such achievements become an inspiration for society," highlighting the family's commitment to national service.

Sukhu mentioned that Sandeep’s father previously served in the Indian Army, and that Sandeep is now upholding this "glorious military tradition" with dedication and commitment. The Chief Minister considered the promotion an inspiration not only for Nadaun but for the entire state of Himachal Pradesh.

Local and Family Background

Sandeep Lakhanpal is from Hareta (Hadeta) village in Galore tehsil, Nadaun. Local sources indicate that he was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army on August 5, 2013. Over the years, he has advanced through the ranks due to his service record, discipline, and professional performance, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

The family's association with the military extends further, as Sandeep's father also served in the Army, and his younger brother has served as well, marking the Lakhanpals as a multi-generational defence family. The promotion news was celebrated with pride in the village, receiving congratulations from both relatives and local residents.

Significance of the Rank and Regional Context

The promotion to Lieutenant Colonel is seen as a key mid-career achievement in the Indian Army, which typically requires more than a decade of commissioned service, demonstrating a blend of operational experience, staff appointments, and positive assessments by selection boards.

This achievement holds particular significance in Hamirpur district and Himachal Pradesh. The state is renowned for its high per-capita contribution of personnel to the armed forces. Hamirpur, in particular, is noted for its high density of serving soldiers, officers, and ex-servicemen households, a tradition dating back to colonial-era recruitment in the hill districts which has persisted over generations.

For the Congress government under Sukhu, acknowledging such local success stories aligns with their emphasis on Himachal's military heritage and the contributions made by defence families. Given that Nadaun is Sukhu’s own constituency, the message also strengthens his personal and political ties to the area.

Official Communication

The Information and Public Relations Department of Himachal Pradesh released the official statement on August 6, 2026. It was widely shared on state government social media platforms. The event was reported by Nation Press and local Hindi media, including Punjab Kesari’s Himachal edition, which confirmed the village details and the family’s multi-generational military service.

The advancement of an officer from a small village in Himachal to Lieutenant Colonel highlights the continuing role of the state's youth in the Indian Army and underscores the pride that military service commands in the hill communities of Hamirpur and beyond.
