Heightened Security on J&K Border Amid Renewed Drone Encounters, India–Pakistan Tensions

Several suspected drone sightings near the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir have prompted increased security precautions, as Indian forces acted promptly in response to what officials perceive as possible aerial intrusions from across the border.

Defense sources reported that unknown drones were observed on the evening of January 15 over sensitive regions including Poonch along the LoC and Ramgarh in the Samba district along the IB. Indian troops responded by initiating counter-unmanned aerial system (counter-UAS) measures, which involved electronic surveillance, tracking techniques, and warning shots in certain areas to discourage the entities.

Security forces are maintaining a high state of vigilance following a series of similar occurrences over the past week. In earlier incidents, suspected drones were seen in the Rajouri district, prompting troops to fire at aerial objects that entered Indian airspace in accordance with standard protocols. The recent sightings have not resulted in any casualties or confirmed infiltrations.

Pattern of Drone Activity

Officials indicate that these recent incidents are part of a larger trend of drone activity along the western border. Within a period of four days, at least three sightings have been reported in Samba, Poonch, and Rajouri districts. On January 9, security agencies discovered an alleged arms cache, including pistols, ammunition, and a grenade, believed to have been delivered by a drone near Paloora village in Samba, heightening fears about drone-based smuggling and reconnaissance.

The Indian forces have intensified their vigilance by deploying radar systems, optical surveillance, electronic jamming devices, and manual engagement options to address evolving aerial threats. The growing frequency of such incidents has raised operational and strategic issues within defense circles.

Army and Diplomatic Response

The Indian Army has reaffirmed its position against aerial intrusions across its borders. General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, has cautioned Pakistan to control such activities, describing the frequent drone sightings as “unacceptable” and confirming India’s commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity.

Defense officials have communicated these concerns to Pakistan at the level of the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), urging adherence to existing border agreements and restraint. While Pakistan has denied involvement in some previous incidents, calling certain claims exaggerated or provocative, it has not issued a detailed official response to the latest sightings.

Strategic Context

Analysts point out that drones have become an essential tool in asymmetric warfare, providing surveillance capabilities and plausible deniability. In the India–Pakistan border context, rugged terrain and the use of small unmanned platforms complicate the assessment of attribution and intent, thereby increasing the risk of miscalculations.

The increase in drone sightings coincides with heightened nationwide security measures, especially with significant national events in progress. Indian defense planners view these incidents as a reminder of the need for improved counter-drone capabilities, accelerated intelligence sharing, and calibrated responses that deter threats without escalating tensions.

While security forces remain vigilant on the ground, officials stress that India’s strategy combines firm military preparedness with careful diplomatic signaling—aiming to prevent provocations while preserving stability along a sensitive and volatile frontier.
