Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar to Assist in Unfurling National Flag with President on Republic Day

Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar represents a new wave of women officers in the Indian Air Force (IAF), characterized by their youth, professional expertise, and deep-rooted commitment to India's tradition of service. On January 26, 2026, she is set to play a significant role in the nation's ceremonial life by assisting the President of India in unfurling the Tricolour at Kartavya Path during the 77th Republic Day celebrations.

This honor places her at the core of an event symbolizing India's unity, sovereignty, and the committed service of its armed forces.

Originating from Kasni village in Haryana, a region with a strong link to the armed forces and a longstanding tradition of national service, Flight Lieutenant Dhankar grew up amidst values of discipline and responsibility. Her upbringing in the Jat heartland instilled in her pride in the uniform.

Her father, a previous participant in a Republic Day parade, served as an early inspiration. Witnessing his experience left a significant impact on her, kindling a dream to one day stand on Kartavya Path herself. Over time, this childhood dream evolved into a definitive ambition to join the armed forces.

Her journey toward the Air Force began during her college years at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, University of Delhi. Here, she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC), a platform known for grooming future military leaders.

Rising to the rank of Cadet Sergeant Major (CSM), Dhankar demonstrated organizational skills, leadership under pressure, and personal discipline. Her achievements were recognized within her NCC unit, where her journey became an inspiration for other cadets. The disciplined environment of the NCC prepared her mentally and physically for her role as an officer.

With a clear purpose, Dhankar appeared for the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT), a highly competitive entry point into the Indian Air Force. Successfully passing the test, she was recommended by the 2 Air Force Selection Board (AFSB), Mysore, for the Administration branch under the M AFCAT (W) 551 entry.

She was commissioned as a Flying Officer on June 17, 2023, as part of the 211 Short Service Commission (Women) Ground Duty Course and soon advanced to the rank of Flight Lieutenant, demonstrating both her professional competence and the Air Force’s merit-based promotion system.

As an Administration branch officer, she handles responsibilities crucial to the Air Force's operational efficiency, including personnel management, logistics, and organizational planning.

Flight Lieutenant Dhankar stayed largely away from public spotlight until her selection for the Republic Day Parade 2026. On January 26, she will assist the President of India in unfurling the national flag at Kartavya Path, an honor designated for officers who embody professionalism and dedication.

The 77th Republic Day Parade will also showcase the evolving identity of the Indian Air Force, including milestones like the participation of women Agniveers in the Air Force band contingent and significant operational displays, such as the 'Sindoor' fighter formation commemorating Operation Sindoor.

Discussing the preparations, Dhankar mentioned the demanding and rigorous training involving early mornings and long hours, yet stressed that representing the Air Force at such a significant national platform makes the effort worthwhile.

In her hometown of Kasni, her selection has been a source of discreet pride. A local event, where young girls sang in her honor, captured the emotional significance of her achievement, illustrating how a journey rooted in rural India has reached the national stage.

For Dhankar, this moment extends beyond personal success. She hopes her journey inspires young Indians, particularly women, to see the armed forces as a commendable and achievable career option.

Women now form an increasing part of the Indian Air Force, constituting around 13 percent of its personnel by 2026. Although challenges persist, the growing presence of women officers in national events signifies progress toward inclusivity and equality.

Flight Lieutenant Akshita Dhankar’s career reflects consistent dedication, shaped by discipline and perseverance. From her NCC involvement to selection boards and ultimately to Kartavya Path, her story demonstrates how commitment can transform a childhood dream into a moment of national pride.

As India's armed forces continue to modernize, her presence at the Republic Day Parade represents a quiet yet powerful testament to a future that is capable, inclusive, and firmly rooted in national service.
