Emerging Leaders Panel Concludes at IONS-2025 with Emphasis on Maritime Cooperation and Security in the Indian Ocean Region

The Emerging Leaders Panel Discussion, part of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS-2025), concluded successfully at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi after two days of intensive discussions held on August 27 and 28. The event served as a platform for young naval leaders from 19 member countries to exchange ideas, share experiences, and strategize on the future of maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Vice Admiral V Srinivas, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the Indian Navy's commitment to fostering dialogue, trust, and cooperative security throughout the IOR.

The event included four thematic sessions:

1 Strategic Importance of the IOR and Challenges for Young Officers – Discussions addressed maritime trade security, climate impact, and regional geopolitical dynamics, encouraging innovative solutions from young leaders.
2 Emerging Technologies in Maritime Security – Focused on AI-enabled systems, unmanned platforms, cyber threats, space-based surveillance, and advancements in maritime reconnaissance.
3 Future Role of IONS in Fostering Collaboration – Emphasized interoperability, joint exercises, and professional exchanges to strengthen regional partnerships.
4 Harnessing Training Capabilities Among IONS Countries – Discussed pooling resources, expanding training linkages, and developing common frameworks to enhance collective preparedness.

Apart from the formal discussions, cultural and social activities allowed participants to immerse themselves in Kerala’s maritime heritage and foster personal connections, which enriched the professional dialogue with informal exchanges.

The panel concluded with a consensus on the importance of enhancing maritime domain awareness, technological collaboration, and shared training initiatives. Delegates reaffirmed the role of IONS as a voluntary and inclusive forum dedicated to strengthening collective maritime security through cooperation and dialogue.

The closing of the Emerging Leaders Panel saw all member nations renew their commitment to collaborate for peace, prosperity, and security across the Indian Ocean Region.
