Delhi Police Constable Deepak Bangar Suspended After Posting Sniper Rifle Videos During BRICS Duty
A Delhi Police constable deployed on rooftop sniper duty for the recently concluded 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi has been suspended after videos allegedly shot from his sensitive security post surfaced on Instagram, prompting a departmental inquiry into how the footage was recorded and shared.
The constable, Deepak Bangar, was attached to the Foreigners Cell of Delhi Police’s Northwest district and had been temporarily reassigned for BRICS security at a five-star hotel in Central Delhi where foreign delegates were staying. As part of the protective arrangement, he was posted on the terrace as a sniper.
The issue came to the attention of senior police officials after videos from his Instagram account began circulating online. The account, identified as @jaat.bangar.0143, has since been blocked.
Footage from a Sensitive Post
According to the videos that circulated, Bangar appears in civilian clothes while wearing a BRICS Summit 2026 identity card and handling a service pistol. The hotel premises and parts of the surrounding area are visible in the footage.
In another clip, he is seen looking through the scope of a sniper rifle while positioned on the terrace. Buildings and other structures around the security point can also be seen in the background.
The videos drew attention because they appeared to have been recorded during a high-security deployment involving foreign dignitaries. While the display of firearms was one concern, police and security observers typically treat such posts more seriously because images from sensitive locations can reveal the position of personnel, observation points, sightlines and other deployment details.
Suspension and Inquiry
After the matter was flagged to senior officers, Delhi Police removed Bangar from BRICS security duty and sent him back to his parent district. He was then suspended with immediate effect.
The department has also ordered an inquiry to establish the circumstances in which the videos were recorded and uploaded. The probe is expected to examine when the footage was shot, whether Bangar was actively on duty at the time and whether any sensitive aspects of the security setup were exposed through the social media posts.
A senior police officer, quoted in media reports, said the department has taken serious note of the disciplinary lapse and that further proceedings will be initiated in accordance with rules once the inquiry is complete.
Security Around the BRICS Summit
The incident occurred against the backdrop of extensive security arrangements for the 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, 2026. The summit brought together leaders and representatives of BRICS member and partner countries.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and several other international leaders attended the meeting. Security had been tightened not only at Bharat Mandapam but also at hotels housing foreign delegations and along designated travel routes.
There has been no reported security breach or attack linked to the videos.
Delhi Police will decide on any additional disciplinary action against the constable after the departmental inquiry is completed.
