Colonel Karan Sandhu: Leadership in 19 Assam Rifles Fostering Stability and Development in Manipur

Colonel Karan Sandhu is at the helm of the 19 Assam Rifles, a pivotal unit within the Assam Rifles, which is deployed in the conflict-prone areas of Manipur. Known for its challenges due to enduring ethnic tensions and intricate security issues, his leadership is noted for marrying operational efficiency with ongoing community engagement to re-establish normality and trust.

Recently marking 60 years since its establishment in 1965, the 19 Assam Rifles operates in crucial districts such as Noney, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur, including the strategically significant National Highway 37 corridor. These areas demand a relentless presence of disciplined and responsive forces, given their critical status in terms of security and logistics.

Under Colonel Sandhu’s guidance, the battalion has executed extensive counter-insurgency operations while also focusing on humanitarian efforts to enhance the lives of local residents. His leadership epitomizes the evolving role of security forces in Northeast India, showcasing them not only as protectors but also as promoters of development.

A notable initiative spearheaded by the unit occurred on February 21, 2024, at the L. Hengjol Community Education Centre in Kangpokpi. Addressing the educational disruptions caused by unrest, the 19 Assam Rifles distributed over 250 sets of textbooks to students from Classes 1 to 10. In addition, the unit provided computer systems and printers, bridging the digital divide in this underserved area. Colonel Sandhu emphasized education's role as a long-term investment in peace and progress during the event.

Furthering this educational focus, Colonel Sandhu attended the opening of the Agape Friendship School on January 29, 2026, in Raenghzaeng village, Churachandpur district. This institution, serving children from pre-nursery to Class VI, aims to significantly lower dropout rates and broaden access to quality education in remote areas. The event included participation from local leaders and stakeholders, demonstrating the collaborative approach taken by the Assam Rifles.

In addition to education, the battalion has engaged in various community development projects in isolated villages like Puichi in Noney and Aling Khundong in Tamenglong district. Working with organizations such as the Sunbird Trust, the unit has supported infrastructure improvements and distributed solar lighting systems, enhancing living conditions in areas with limited access to essential services.

While community outreach remains a primary objective, Colonel Sandhu ensures that the battalion maintains its operational readiness and military values. The unit routinely conducts patrols and area domination and honors the legacy of fallen soldiers. On March 29, 2026, the 19 Assam Rifles honored Rifleman Nabab Singh in Noney with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, reinforcing its traditions of honor and sacrifice.

Efforts to strengthen civil-military relations are evident through initiatives like “A Day with Company Commander,” which enables students and civilians to interact with soldiers, providing insight into military life and instilling values of discipline, leadership, and patriotism.

The Assam Rifles, the oldest paramilitary force in India, operates under the Indian Army's operational control and is instrumental in maintaining peace and security across the Northeast. Commandants like Colonel Karan Sandhu, often seconded from the Army, are entrusted with leading units in some of the nation's most complex terrains and socio-political climates.

Colonel Sandhu’s tenure with the 19 Assam Rifles exemplifies a modern style of military leadership that combines firmness with empathy. His initiatives highlight how continuous engagement, trust-building, and development-focused actions can complement security operations to achieve lasting stability. In regions like Manipur, such leadership continues to make a tangible impact, underscoring the notion that genuine security is intertwined with inclusive growth and community collaboration.
