Captain Sridhar Tata Leading INS Tamal Commissioning in Russia

Captain Sridhar Tata, an esteemed naval officer and alumnus of Sainik School Korukonda, is set to commission the Indian Navy's newest stealth frigate, INS Tamal, in Kaliningrad, Russia, on July 1. This appointment makes him the first Saikorian to command a frigate-class warship during a foreign induction, marking a significant achievement for his alma mater and the defence community in Andhra Pradesh.
Korukonda, a tranquil town in Vizianagaram district, hosts one of India's leading Sainik Schools. Since its inception in 1961, the school has produced a distinguished roster of armed forces officers, including Lt Gen K. Surendra Nath, Vice Admiral M.S. Pawar, and the late Col. B. Santosh Babu, who was martyred in the Galwan clash. Captain Sridhar now joins this prestigious group, highlighting his years of dedication, hard work, and military prowess.

Originating from Srikakulam district and belonging to a family with a robust defence tradition, Captain Sridhar has devoted over 26 years to the Indian Navy. His career includes service on 12 warships and commanding three. He has been involved in pivotal operations such as Operation Vijay during the Kargil conflict, Operation Parakram following the Parliament attack, and various anti-piracy and maritime security missions. Additionally, he was instrumental in establishing the Maritime Security Wing in the National Security Council Secretariat under NSA Ajit Doval.
INS Tamal, the frigate he is set to commission, is part of the Krivak class of stealth frigates and likely the last complete warship India will import as it advances its Atmanirbhar Bharat defence strategy. Constructed in Kaliningrad, the vessel features advanced technology, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, HUMSA NG Mk II sonar, sophisticated communication systems, and Russian-origin Shtil vertical launch surface-to-air missiles.
Leading a team of 250 personnel for the commissioning, Captain Sridhar's accomplishment has evoked pride among his peers from Sainik School Korukonda. With both his father and father-in-law having served in the Indian Air Force, and his brother and in-laws holding high-ranking military positions, Captain Sridhar continues a rich legacy of military service.
As INS Tamal prepares to join the Indian Navy's fleet, this occasion underscores the crucial role Sainik Schools play in shaping India's defence leadership. Captain Sridhar's journey from Korukonda to Kaliningrad not only marks a personal achievement but also represents the excellence and national pride associated with his institution.
