BSF Constable Fatally Shot by Colleague During Dispute in Murshidabad, Bengal

A tragic event unfolded late Saturday night when a 55-year-old Border Security Force (BSF) constable was fatally shot by a colleague during a dispute in Samserganj, located in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.
The victim, Ratan Lal Singh from Rajasthan, succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the Jangipur sub-divisional hospital. Local medical facilities were unable to manage the severe bleeding caused by multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen.
Authorities reported that Shivam Kumar Mishra, a 29-year-old constable from Chhattisgarh, allegedly fired 13 rounds from his service weapon, several of which proved fatal to Singh. The shooting is said to have stemmed from an argument while on duty.
Initial findings indicate that the conflict arose when Singh denied Mishra's request for leave to visit his pregnant wife. In response, Mishra allegedly set his rifle to burst mode and discharged multiple rounds.
Following the incident, the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier alerted local law enforcement, leading to Mishra's arrest by Samserganj police early on Sunday. A case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, following a formal complaint by BSF officials. Mishra, who has been with the force for four years, appeared in Jangipur court and is now in judicial custody.
N. K. Pandey, a BSF spokesperson, confirmed the occurrence but refrained from disclosing more details, citing the ongoing investigation.
The shooting took place while the BSF’s 119th battalion was conducting patrols in the Paharghati area, which has experienced heightened security since April due to communal tensions related to protests against recent amendments to the Waqf Act. The region remains under the watch of central paramilitary forces, including the BSF, following orders from the Calcutta High Court.
