Breaking Barriers: Battalion Cadet Captain Ritul Duhan and the First Female Cadets of NDA

Battalion Cadet Captain Ritul Duhan

The National Defence Academy (NDA) has marked a historic chapter in its legacy by welcoming its first-ever batch of female cadets. Among these trailblazers is Battalion Cadet Captain Ritul Duhan, whose journey is a shining example of resilience, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to service. As these pioneering women prepare to graduate, Ritul stands tall—not just as a cadet, but as a symbol of evolving gender roles within India's armed forces.

A Historic First

In 2021, for the first time in its 75-year history, the NDA opened its gates to female candidates—a landmark decision that redefined opportunities for women in uniform. One of the first to embrace this path was Ritul Duhan, hailing from Hisar, Haryana. A national-level athlete and a state-level debater, Ritul brought with her a dynamic blend of academic excellence and sporting prowess.

“It was a historic step to induct female cadets in the NDA. Being part of the first course, I feel obliged and privileged,” she reflects, aware that her presence will inspire generations of women to come.

Inside the NDA: Life of a Cadet

Life at NDA is anything but ordinary. Designed to shape future military leaders, the academy follows a rigorous routine that demands discipline, endurance, and teamwork.

A Day in the Life:

  • 5:00 AM: The day begins with the NDA prayer and honour code, fostering unity among cadets.
  • Morning Drills: Physical training sessions that build stamina and strength.
  • Academic Classes: Cadets pursue their bachelor’s degrees, ensuring a holistic education.
  • Lunch & Breaks: A time to regroup, reflect, and recharge.
  • Evening Sports: Physical training and games instill teamwork and a spirit of sportsmanship.
  • Study Period: Cadets dedicate time to academic study before wrapping up the day.
  • Evening Procedure: Reviewing the next day’s schedule, followed by dinner and personal time.

This structured lifestyle nurtures leadership qualities, with senior cadets like Ritul guiding their juniors through every challenge.

The Journey to NDA

Ritul’s dream to serve the nation led her to the NDA after completing her first year in engineering. Inspired by the academy's legacy, she prepared rigorously and successfully cleared the NDA entrance exam.

“When I saw the pride in my parents' eyes, I knew this was where I belonged,” she says.

Her achievement wasn’t just personal—it was a proud moment for her family and an encouraging sign for many young aspirants.

Overcoming Challenges and Breaking Norms

The initial integration of female cadets wasn’t without hurdles. There were concerns, adjustments, and the need to break stereotypes—both within and outside the academy.

However, in just three years, the NDA has made remarkable progress:

  • Customized Training: Physical regimens tailored to be inclusive and effective for female cadets.
  • Equal Opportunities: Women now participate in the same camps, competitions, and leadership roles as their male counterparts.
  • Mentorship and Support: Senior cadets mentor juniors, fostering a strong support network.

These transformations have enriched the academy's ecosystem and helped shape a more inclusive future.

A Leader and a Role Model

As Battalion Cadet Captain, Ritul carries the weight of leadership with grace and grit. Her responsibilities extend beyond routine duties—she is a beacon for the cadets who will follow.

“We are not just completing our training; we are building a path for the next generation,” she emphasizes.

Her presence and progress have already started inspiring countless girls across India to dream bigger and aim higher.

Education and Excellence

While physical fitness is key, academics are equally important at the NDA. Ritul, with her strong foundation in mathematics, attempted 117 questions in the NDA entrance exam and scored over 250 marks in the subject—an impressive feat.

“The NDA trains you holistically. It’s not just military training; it’s about developing every aspect of yourself,” she says.

Looking Ahead: A Life of Service

With her NDA graduation around the corner, Ritul will soon proceed to advanced training at a respective service academy, eventually being commissioned into the armed forces.

“I look forward to serving my country with honour and commitment,” she affirms.

Message to Aspiring Cadets

To the young women dreaming of donning the uniform, Ritul offers heartfelt advice:

“If we could do it, so can you. NDA will challenge you, transform you, and teach you to push your limits—mentally, physically, emotionally. Take the leap.”

Battalion Cadet Captain Ritul Duhan’s story is not just one of personal triumph—it’s a story of transformation for the entire Indian armed forces. Her journey stands as a bold statement: the future is inclusive, and women are ready to lead from the front.
