Ashok Yadav Promoted from IG to Additional Director General in BSF

New Delhi, October 15, 2026: The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the promotion of Ashok Yadav, IPS (Kerala cadre, 1998 batch), from Inspector General to Additional Director General (ADG) in the Border Security Force (BSF), placing him among the senior leadership of India’s primary border-guarding force.

According to the order, Shri Yadav, who was serving as Inspector General in the BSF, will now hold the rank of ADG at Level 15 of the pay matrix. His tenure in the upgraded post will be for three years from the date he assumes charge, or until October 25, 2029, whichever comes earlier. The move also completes a combined central deputation tenure of seven years in the BSF.

Yadav is a direct recruit IPS officer with IPS ID 19981046 and belongs to Rajasthan by domicile. He joined the Indian Police Service on September 7, 1998. In October 2022, he was appointed Inspector General in the BSF for an initial five-year deputation period and has since served in important operational assignments within the force, including as IG of the BSF Kashmir Frontier.

During his posting on the Kashmir Frontier, Yadav was involved in overseeing border security operations along the Line of Control, where BSF units handle sensitive duties linked to infiltration prevention and frontier management. The source says he also stressed the growing operational importance of technology, drone warfare, AI-based surveillance and wider modernisation in BSF functioning.

In 2025, while serving as IG, BSF Kashmir, he was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. The award recognised his service during a period in which the BSF Kashmir Frontier remained focused on border security operations in a challenging operational environment.

The latest promotion comes as part of a series of recent senior-level postings and tenure extensions approved by the Government of India for officers in the Central Armed Police Forces. The BSF, one of the country’s key armed police organisations, is responsible for securing the international borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
