Army Officer Allegedly Drives Under Influence, Injures 30 in Nagpur Accident

An alarming event occurred in Nagpur on Sunday evening when an army officer, allegedly intoxicated, drove his car and injured at least 25 to 30 individuals. The vehicle ultimately overturned and landed in a roadside drain, inciting widespread public anger.

The individual involved has been identified as 40-year-old Harshpal Mahadev Waghmare, an officer with the Indian Army stationed in Assam. At the time of the incident, he was on a four-day leave in Maharashtra.

Authorities report that Waghmare was driving at high speed from Durga Chowk to Hamlapuri in the Nagardhan area around 8:30 pm when he apparently lost control. His car struck numerous people in a brief period before crashing and overturning into a drain.

Witnesses recounted that most of the injured were bystanders and local residents who happened to be by the roadside when the car hurtled through the area. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported thus far.

In the aftermath, a large number of angry residents dragged Waghmare out of the overturned vehicle and physically attacked him. Videos captured at the scene depict him with a bloodied face, attempting to protect himself from the crowd.

Officers from the Ramtek police station quickly arrived at the location and managed to disperse the mob. Waghmare was apprehended and subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment. It has been verified by officials that he was indeed under the influence of alcohol during the incident.

Authorities are conducting an investigation to uncover the complete details surrounding the event. Charges related to reckless driving, putting lives at risk, and driving while intoxicated are expected to be filed.
