From Amazon to Indian Army: Engineer Leaves ₹46 Lakh Package to Become Lieutenant

A 27-year-old cloud engineer from Lucknow who turned down a lucrative corporate career, including a job at Amazon and another offer from Airbus, is set to be commissioned into the Indian Army on Saturday at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Gaya.

Shardendu Tiwari, who lives in Neelmatha in Lucknow and has family roots in Pipergaon in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district, will complete the final step of the passing-out parade as a second-generation soldier. His father, Honorary Captain Raj Kumar Tiwari, served for 36 years in the Army Service Corps before retirement, and that family background appears to have weighed heavily in the younger Tiwari’s decision to leave the technology sector for the armed forces.

Tiwari studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Chandimandir, in Haryana before pursuing engineering and postgraduate studies at Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Information Technology and an M.Tech in Computer Science and Information Security from the 2021–2023 postgraduate batch. After campus placement, he joined Amazon as a cloud engineer on an annual package of about ₹46 lakh. He was also selected by Airbus, adding another high-value offer to the career path he ultimately chose not to follow.

Despite that professional trajectory, his ambition to join the Army remained active. According to the details shared by his alma mater, Tiwari appeared for Army selection eight times before being recommended. He was recommended for the Technical Graduate Course through the 14 Services Selection Board, Allahabad, and then moved on to OTA Gaya. He entered the Army through the technical entry route, which allows officers with engineering and technical qualifications to serve in specialised roles while remaining connected to their academic discipline.

Explaining what attracted him to military life, Tiwari said: “I was also drawn to the armed forces because of the opportunities they offer for adventure and field service.”

A defence spokesperson said that, even after achieving professional success and securing lucrative opportunities, Tiwari chose to follow his father’s footsteps, gave up a high-paying corporate career and opted for the olive-green uniform. During his training at OTA Gaya, he was appointed Senior Under Officer, one of the highest cadet appointments at the academy, reflecting the leadership role he held in the course. He is also described as a mountain-trekking enthusiast who plays basketball and table tennis, and he has attributed his eventual success to perseverance and a clear sense of purpose.

Saturday’s parade will be the 29th passing-out parade at OTA Gaya. A total of 254 cadets, including 219 men and 35 women, are scheduled to be commissioned after completing Short Service Commission (Technical) training. Lieutenant General Le Van Hoang of the Vietnam People’s Army is expected to attend as the chief guest.

The academy commandant, Lieutenant General Sandeep Singh, has said the outgoing batch has been trained for multi-domain operations and exposed to new-age technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, cyber systems and robotics. Male officers from the course are expected to be posted across several arms and services, including the Corps of Engineers, the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, the Corps of Signals and the Infantry.

OTA Gaya is one of the Indian Army’s key officer-training institutions and specialises in preparing technical graduates for commissioned service. For Tiwari, the parade will bring to a close a long journey that began in the corporate technology world and continued through repeated attempts at Army selection. For his family, it extends a military tradition built on the service of Honorary Captain Raj Kumar Tiwari in the Army Service Corps.

The commissioning will confer the rank of Lieutenant, after which the newly commissioned officers will proceed to their allotted units across the country.
