Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Assumes Command as Chief of the Indian Navy

New Delhi, May 31, 2026 — Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has officially taken over as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) of the Indian Navy, following the retirement of Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi. Admiral Tripathi concluded his service with a notable career.

This leadership transition at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi has been carried out smoothly. Serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command since July 2025, Admiral Swaminathan steps into his new role with nearly four decades of extensive operational, strategic, and administrative experience. His tenure as CNS is set to continue until December 31, 2028.

In his inaugural speech, Admiral Swaminathan expressed his honor and gratitude. He remarked, “I assume command today as the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff with a deep sense of humility, responsibility, pride, and gratitude. Being selected by the top leadership of the country for this job has been the highest honour and privilege of my life.”

He emphasized the Navy's steadfast dedication to national security, stating that the force remains vigilant to safeguard national interests amidst a challenging and unpredictable regional security environment. Ensuring operational readiness and advancing technological modernization were highlighted as his key priorities.

Admiral Swaminathan also focused on the Navy's responsibility in protecting India’s economic and security interests. He pledged to continue enhancing capability development programs, reinforcing existing initiatives, and expanding capacities through advanced technologies. He underscored indigenous defense manufacturing as a significant area of focus, reinforcing the Navy’s commitment to self-reliance, joint operations among the armed forces, and thorough indigenization.

Recognizing his predecessor, Admiral Swaminathan expressed gratitude to Admiral Tripathi for his exemplary service and expressed his personal commitment to strengthening the Indian Navy’s capabilities.

In his farewell address, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi reflected on the Navy’s successful operations, including Sindoor and Urja Suraksha, expressing confidence that Admiral Swaminathan will lead the service to greater achievements.

A distinguished career spanning four decades

Admiral Swaminathan’s naval career began on July 1, 1987, when he was commissioned into the Indian Navy as a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he has received advanced training at prestigious institutions including the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom, the College of Naval Warfare in Karanja, and the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He holds a PhD in International Studies from Mumbai University and master’s degrees from King’s College London, among other leading institutions.

During his career, Admiral Swaminathan has led several frontline warships, including the missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, the missile corvette INS Kulish, the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. Notably, he commanded the Vikramaditya during the International Fleet Review in 2016.

In his flag rank, he has served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters Southern Naval Command, where he established the Indian Naval Safety Team. His roles have included Flag Officer Sea Training, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, and Advisor for Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India. At the Vice Admiral level, he has held positions including Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command; Controller of Personnel Services; Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters; and Vice Chief of the Naval Staff before leading the Western Naval Command.

His exceptional service has been acknowledged with several honors, such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), along with various operational and long-service awards.

The Government of India announced Admiral Swaminathan’s appointment on May 9, 2026, reflecting confidence in his leadership skills, operational expertise, and strategic insight. As he takes command, the Indian Navy is set to enhance its maritime capabilities, drive self-reliance in defense manufacturing, and play a pivotal role in India's maritime security within the Indo-Pacific region.
