1,090 Security Personnel Receive Gallantry and Service Medals for Independence Day 2025

The Ministry of Home Affairs has declared that 1,090 individuals from the Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence (HG&CD), and Correctional Services sectors will be the recipients of Gallantry and Service Medals in celebration of Independence Day 2025.

The awards comprise 233 Gallantry Medals (GM), 99 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM).

Gallantry Awards

Out of the 233 Gallantry Medals awarded, 226 are designated for Police personnel, six for Fire Service members, and one for HG&CD. These awards highlight exceptional acts of bravery involving the safeguarding of lives and property, crime prevention, or the apprehension of criminals, frequently under high personal risk.

The regional allocation includes 54 awardees from areas impacted by Left Wing Extremism, 152 from Jammu & Kashmir, three from the North-East, and 24 from other regions.

Service Awards

The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded for a remarkable and distinguished service record, whereas the Medal for Meritorious Service recognizes valuable contributions characterized by dedication and ingenuity.

Among the 99 PSM awards, 89 have been accorded to Police personnel, five to Fire Service, three to HG&CD, and two to Correctional Services. The 758 MSM awards include 635 recipients from Police, 51 from Fire Service, 41 from HG&CD, and 31 from Correctional Services.
